Summers are the perfect time to lay back and relax, enjoy the sun, and even take part in fun activities. However, if you’re looking to develop your English language skills, taking a bit of time during the summer for studying could be very rewarding.
Even if you are not enrolled in English classes over the summer, studying and practising grammar, spelling, speaking and writing can help you better retain the skills you have learned. You might even be able to improve!
Here are a few ways that English language students can keep focused on their studies this summer.
Keep Your Study Space Organised and Comfortable
Whether you are off for the summer or taking courses during those hot and sunny months, it’s important to keep your study space neat and tidy if you want to stay focused. Start by organising your space, and making sure that all of your notes and materials are easy to find and access. Making it difficult to locate an important set of English program notes, for example, could waste valuable time and makes your study sessions longer.
You should also make sure that you are not distracted during your studies. Try not to use your laptop or phone unless you need to for your coursework, so that you will not be tempted to browse the internet. Studying in quieter spaces can also be helpful for limiting distractions.
During hot weather, it is important to make sure that the space you are studying in is not too warm, too, so that you feel comfortable during your session. You should also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and healthy.
Staying organised will make studying easier
Study English Outside to Enjoy the Sunny Weather
If you don't want to spend too much time indoors during the summer, you can always study outside. Take your laptop and notes and find a nice, quiet spot in a local park, at the beach, or even just in your garden. This way, you can enjoy the weather, the nature, and the scenery, while still having a productive study session and working towards you goal.
If you are attending English language learning classes in the UK and Ireland, though, remember that the weather can change quite quickly. Even in the summer, it might start to rain suddenly during your study session. Make sure to bring a bag to protect your course materials and computer, and a raincoat for yourself!
English Language Students Should Take Plenty of Breaks During the Summer
At any time of year, it’s important to take a reasonable number of breaks during your study period. In the summer, though, it can be particularly helpful. When the weather is warm and people all around you are having fun, it can be easy to start feeling like you are missing out. This could actually mean that you get less work done, as you will feel frustrated and unhappy.
Stepping away for 15 or even 30 minutes every few hours will help you relax and stay positive. You can even take the time to enjoy the nice weather, perhaps stepping outside for an ice cream or a quick walk around a local park. This way, you will return feeling refreshed and positive, and ready to continue working on improving your skills.
